‘BALL OF TERROR’

As a 2022 X Museum Digital Commission artist, Massan started to develop a series of works entitled 'Ball Of Terror', described as an abstract simulation of a time cut preceding the interruption of a 'Baile Funk' in the São Paulo favela of Paraisópolis by a military police operation in 2019 that resulted in the death of the 14 years old Gustavo Cruz Xavier. The piece explores the fictional behavior of animated digital sculptures succumbing to a constant armed intervention, presenting an open site experience for the public to navigate via browser. Its first act, 'Where There is Smoke, There is Fire', is a gamified metaverse experience of four interrelated virtual worlds.

For the project first act, the artist revisited the soundtrack of the late series '_entre' executed at the 2018 SP-ARTE Performance Pavillion in collaboration with Juliana Araújo, which incorporates archived dialogues between police officers during that year's conflicts in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In this work Gabriel scanned historic buildings around his home in Kreuzberg, Berlin, digitally graffitiing the tops of the facades and adding blood and projectile marks. The artist investigates his 'War On Drugs' memories and his immigrant relationship to the German capital and its historic nature.
