“while highlighting the dimension of the “foreign” gaze towards countries in the southern hemisphere, complexifies it by proposing the creation of new worlds in which colonial paradigms do not fade away, but are questioned at the very least.”

Baile Do Terror’ (Ball Of Terror) is an video installation concluded with several collaborators, based on an existing body of work produced around power in a context of state violence. The multi-perspective work looks into a specific case of police brutality in São Paulo to question broader structures of power and violence. Using the notion of ‘Critical Fabulation’ by author Sadiya Hartman along with critical race theory, it is possible to conduct larger conversations, working with radical storytelling as a tool to look at the entanglement of localised stories with broader phenomena and power structures.

The installation includes four video channels and sculptures and is bound by a constructed space analogous to a winter garden, forming its own space within the institutional realm.

Mateus Nunes on “Mil Graus” - Art Forum

“The heat of the streets is the context for Gabriel Massan’s Baile do Terror (Ball of Terror), 2022–24, an immersive installation of a digital universe that denounces Brazilian police violence at funk dances.”
